The Story of Cascina Massara

The Cascina Massara Winery is located in the heart of the prestigious and renowned hills of Verduno and boasts an ancient winemaking tradition: its roots date back to 1899, when Giovanni Battista Burlotto courageously accepted the request of the Duke of the Abruzzi to send some cases of Barolo from Verduno to the North Pole. The wine was shipped aboard the ship “Stella Polare” and embarked on a long and adventurous journey to the far north. Historical documents confirm that the precious bottles reached Oslo on June 12, 1899, where, due to the prohibitive weather conditions that prevented further travel, they remained until the following spring. On March 11, 1900, the journey continued, but dog-drawn sleds had to be used, as sea travel was too dangerous due to the rough seas. The bottles of Barolo thus reached their destination for the first time in such an extreme region: an interesting testimony recounts the surprise of those who, upon opening the crates of Barolo from Verduno, found a wine of impeccable quality that had not lost its sublime characteristics despite the extreme conditions in which it was kept.

Thus was born, in those distant lands, the fame of Barolo from Verduno, which spread so rapidly that in the same year Count Sambus requested as many as two hundred bottles of Barolo from Verduno for his around-the-world voyage aboard the ship “Ettore Fieramosca”, departing from the port of La Spezia.

The story of this winemaking legacy continues with Andrea Burlotto, grandson of Giovanni Battista, who at the beginning of the 1900s carried on the tradition by opening his own winery.

The Cascina Massara Winery as it is known today was founded in 2024 by Sergio and David, respectively son and grandson of Andrea Burlotto, bringing new life to ancient and prestigious traditions in a majestic location overlooking the Verduno landscape, on those same hills where the echoes of past choices still resonate.

Our winery is not merely a place of wine production: every bottle is the result of commitment and love for our work, a dedication renewed with every harvest, year after year, in a constant pursuit of quality and a deep respect for our land.
